August 2008

No idea what the exact date is but Miss Bellasis is off on holiday for a couple of weeks of sun, sea, sand, archaeology and the rather fascinating history of Malta (and of course she'll be trawling the shops for fabulous haberdashery). She'll be back on the 5th September to administer to your needs.......

June 2008

7th June

Finnish station MTV came to film a design and lifestyle program at Judys this week; they were rather taken with Miss Bellasis' handbags so these should be making an appearance on national television on the 7th July which is rather exciting.

May 2008

20th May

Well, Miss Bellasis is busy this month producing 'limited edition' handbags using her store of haberdashery finds and flea market materials deemed unsuitable for nipple tasselry. Unfortunately, for all of you out there, they will only be available here on Åland. If you are here, you can visit Judys Hantverk och Inredning in the old dairy to purchase one, and if you aren't, well you'll just have to imagine how beautiful* they are.

As you might have read below, Miss Bellasis donated a pair of Marguerite nipple tassels to the charity auction at the Ooh La La! Party for Parkinsons in April, the final total donated to the Parkinsons Disease Society was £2685, so a great big hoorah to Charlotte Thompson for organising it is in order. You can see pictures of the even here and here: www.myspace.com/charlottethomson

*in the totally unbiased opinion of Miss Bellasis, of course.

March 2008

19th March

We've added a new style today - a sort of coconut ice/battenburg cake/Helsinki City Museum inspired affair in two contrasting colours of double satin ribbon.  We've named them Phoebe after Katherine Hepburn's character in the perfect for a rainy afternoon film Quality Street.

18th March

Miss Bellasis failed to mention the double page spread in one of Åland's newspapers.  It was actually back in December but the winter was so extraordinarily busy it slipped our minds to mention it before. The other thing we must mention is the following event in Nottingham, UK:

It looks like it should be a splendid night, so make sure you get a ticket while there are still some left; as well as being thoroughly entertained you'll be able to bid for some marvellous burlesque goodies, including a pair of Miss Bellasis' Marguerite.

February 2008

14th February

A very happy Valentines Day to you all.  Here's some tips from those 'Fashion with Compassion' people at Bourgeois Boheme.  Perhaps a little late for this year but you could file them away for next year or treat your loved one to a non-date specific surprise instead!

9th February

And once again one has to ask where on earth the previous months have gone?  Writing about (and drawing) Russian bricks and pits certainly took up some of it; fulfilling orders, correspondence, moving house, various vaguely artistic projects, a trip to Helsinki to take in the very first Helsinki Burlesque Festival (a marvellous night and a big thank you to those wonderful folks for putting it on) and more language learning took up the rest....

November 2007

11th November

Is it really November already?  Where on earth did October go?  Well wherever it went it was probably in a similar way to October and September, though with less bricks and more pits, and the addition of some rather interesting work editing English texts for a book about lighthouses.

September 2007

21st September

Gosh!  Orders from Ghent, Belfast, Stockholm and London have been (and still are) keeping Miss Bellasis busy.  As has a rather large pile of 19th century Russian bricks.  Not to mention learning Swedish and the names of various trees in Latvian....

August 2007

7th August

Well firstly, the rather exciting news that Miss Bellasis is featured in Sex in Design by Lou Savoir (Antwerp: Tectum, July 2007); an image rich trilingual survey of the best in modern erotic design.  Pop along to your local book seller for a copy or visit Amazon for more details.

And carrying on with a literary theme, over the summer Miss Bellasis has been mentioned twice in The Grumpy Old Bookman's blog; once in the third part of his wonderfully enlightening discourse on Victorian pornography and following this in Why do I love Mondays?.

But really, has there been no more news than this since May?  Well, there's actually been rather a lot happening; suffice to say it's been a rather busy summer and one which has left no time for reportage. Orders have kept needle and thread flying at Maison Verveine; Café Bönan (Bönan, we have been informed by several older diners, was once the vernacular for a curvaceous lady...) has been doing marvellously, and Miss Bellasis has been developing rather unladylike biceps and a 'farmer's tan' from wielding trowel and shovel in the interests of Ålandic archaeology.  August looks set to continue as June and July before, but with more (time and weather permitting) evenings spent frolicking on the beautiful shores of this adopted isle and so we envisage few news updates until at least September.....

May 2007

28th May

Well, Scarlet has arrived and here's what they said about Miss Bellasis, in their piece entitled Rude Food: "But missbellasis.com wins our dinner reservation - they've fashioned their Amour de Tita nipple pasties from chocolate with a hint of smoky chilli - now that's hot!". Isn't that marvellous!

7th May

Ooh, gosh! It's all been happening.

Miss Bellasis' chocolate pasties, Amour de Tita, are featured in Scarlet Magazine's May food and drink special.  We'll put the piece up when the magazine arrives from over the water...

We say 'arrives from over the water' as we're just in the last stages of completing the move to the Åland islands in the Baltic Sea where we are also involved in a new 'eco' café, quaintly named Café Bönan, in the Sjökvarteret area of Mariehamn.  The emphasis will be on local, organic and fairly traded ingredients and varied international themes: this weekend was Soupe au Pistou with freshly baked Fougasse, followed by Banana Tarte Tatin and accompanied by lashings of Jacques Dutronc; next weekend will be Rasam and Chilla followed by Nariyal Barfi, served to the strains of Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhosle and others. Why not drop in for lunch or 'fika' you're in the area?

And if all that wasn't exciting enough, Miss Bellasis is also going to return to a previous love - archaeology.  How terribly full and exciting life can be!

April 2007

13th April

Miss Bellasis has returned from a jaunt to the south of France, and comes home laden with some lovely vintage jet beading.  She hasn't quite decided what to do with it, but watch the Vintage Trims, Limited Editions page for the results...

March 2007

If you happen to be in the Nottingham area between March 20th - 26th, then we suggest you saunter along to "Ooh La La ~ Burlesque Inspired Art" at the View from the Top Gallery, Nottingham.  It's shaping up to be quite an event and Miss Bellasis will be exhibiting her wares there as will many other persons of a similar persuasion. Please visit www.oohlala-art.co.uk for further details.
